By Marian Williams - Marilyn in Bright Blue
France, 2024
‘Marilyn in Bright Blue’ is a mixed media composition from the Bill Boards series.
A fragment of the photograph of Marilyn Monroe, taken by Bert Stern during 'The Last Sitting', forms the basis of this series.
Inspired by Andy Warhol's serial portraits, each work in the series is based on a single image. The image is transferred onto canvas and finished with oil paint and pastels.
The rough lines and torn edges are reminiscent of a weathered vintage advertising poster, yet the overall impression is calm and soft.
This work delicately captures the timeless essence of a Hollywood icon through a soft, airy color palette. The face stands out against a calming blue background, emphasizing the softness and mystery of the expression.
The artist succeeds in transcending the simple portrait to create a timeless and poignant work of art.
