Frida M2 No. 3

By Marian Williams -Frida M2 No.3

From the Frida series: a powerful Billboard collection of large-format portraits of Frida Kahlo. This series was first presented during the group exhibition Retro Fantastic in 2019 at the Dutch Design Hotel Artemis, Amsterdam.

The starting point is an impressive portrait of Frida Kahlo that shows both pride and scars. Although the composition is the same in all works, variations in color, texture, and finish give each piece of art a unique look.

The inspiration comes from Andy Warhol’s portrait series, but the execution is entirely unique: not a screen print, but a transfer process in which the image is mirrored, enlarged, placed on canvas, and refined with oil paint and pastel chalk.

The combination of rough lines, torn edges, and layered structures creates a weathered vintage billboard look. The vibrant colors and tangible textures emphasize Frida’s iconic mix of strength and vulnerability, resulting in a contemporary tribute to a legendary artist.
