Frida Billboard 4

By Marian Williams -Billboard 4

From the Frida series: a grand Billboard portrait collection of Frida Kahlo on monumental canvas. The series was first presented during the group exhibition Retro Fantastic in 2019 at the Dutch Design Hotel Artemis, Amsterdam.

The starting point is a powerful portrait of Frida Kahlo, showing both pride and the traces of her life. Although the composition is the same in every artwork, the use of different colors and finishes makes each piece completely unique.

Inspired by Andy Warhol’s iconic portrait style, but created through refined transfer techniques instead of screen printing, the works take on a character of their own. The images are mirrored, enlarged, transferred onto canvas, and finished with oil paint and pastel chalk.

The rough lines, torn edges, and layered structures evoke the feeling of a weathered vintage billboard. The combination of vivid colors and tangible textures reflects the balance between fragility and strength – a visual ode to Frida Kahlo’s enduring influence.
