Frida Billboard 3

By Marian Williams -Billboard 3

From the Frida series: a special BillBoard collection of large-format portraits of Frida Kahlo, shown for the first time during the group exhibition Retro Fantastic in 2019 at the Dutch Design Hotel Artemis, Amsterdam.

The starting point is a powerful image of Frida Kahlo – proud and marked by life – which remains the same in every composition, yet is given new life each time through unique variations in color and finish.

Inspired by Andy Warhol’s iconic portrait series, these works are not printed as screen prints, but created using sophisticated transfer techniques. The images are mirrored, enlarged, and transferred onto canvas, after which they are given their final character with oil paint and pastel chalk.

The rough lines, torn edges, and overlapping layers give the work a weathered, vintage billboard look. At the same time, the combination of color and texture creates a subtle balance between strength and vulnerability, making the series a contemporary ode to one of the most influential artists in art history.
