Frida Billboard 2

By Marian Williams -Billboard 2

From the Frida series: an impressive Billboard portrait collection of Frida Kahlo on large-format canvas. The series was first presented during the group exhibition Retro Fantastic in 2019 at the Dutch Design Hotel Artemis, Amsterdam.

Central to the work is an iconic portrait of Frida Kahlo, which radiates both pride and vulnerability. Although the composition is identical in every work, each piece gains its own character through unique color choices and finishes.

Inspired by Andy Warhol’s portrait series, these works were not created using screen printing, but through special transfer techniques. The image is mirrored, enlarged, printed, and transferred onto canvas, after which oil paint and pastel chalk complete the work.

Raw lines, torn edges, and overlapping layers give the canvases a weathered, vintage billboard look. The interplay of colors and textures emphasizes the balance between strength and fragility, paying tribute to Frida Kahlo’s indestructible spirit in a contemporary artistic translation.
