Blue Marilyn

By Marian Williams - Blue Marilyn

The Bill Board series is a portrait series of Marilyn Monroe; a collection of large canvases, originally created for the group exhibition Retro Fantastic in 2019 at the Dutch Design Hotel Artemis, Amsterdam, the Netherlands.

A fragment of Bert Stern's iconic photo of Marilyn Monroe from the Last Sitting forms the basis of this series. The identical composition is used in all portraits, but each artwork is original and unique due to variations in color and finish.

Inspired by Andy Warhol's famous portrait series, each work is based on one and the same image. Unlike traditional screen prints, the Bill Board series is crafted using special transfer techniques.

The images are mirrored, enlarged, and printed, then transferred onto canvas and finished with oil paint and pastel chalk. The rugged lines and torn edges are reminiscent of a weathered vintage billboard, while the overall look is soft and serene.
